Importance of Sanding Between Coats

📣 Are you working on a woodworking or painting project and wondering how to achieve that smooth, flawless finish? Well, I've got a handy tip for you today: sanding between coats to remove nibs!

When applying multiple coats of paint or varnish, it's not uncommon to end up with little imperfections called "nibs." These raised or rough areas can be caused by dust settling on the wet surface, tiny air bubbles, or uneven brush strokes.

Sanding between coats is a crucial step to achieve a professional-looking and ultra-smooth finish. Here's a quick guide to help you out:

1️⃣ Allow the previous coat to dry: Before sanding, make sure the previous coat is completely dry. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the recommended drying time.

2️⃣ Choose the right sandpaper: For nib removal, it's best to use a fine-grit sandpaper such as 320 or 400 grit. These finer grits will smooth out the imperfections without scratching the underlying surface.

3️⃣ Gently sand the surface: Take the sandpaper and lightly sand the entire surface, paying special attention to the areas with nibs. Remember, you're not trying to remove the entire coat; you just want to smooth out the imperfections. Be gentle and use even pressure to avoid creating uneven surfaces.

4️⃣ Wipe off the residue: After sanding, use a clean, damp cloth or tack cloth to wipe away any sanding dust or residue. This is essential to ensure a clean surface for the next coat.

5️⃣ Apply the next coat: Once you've removed the nibs and wiped away the dust, it's time to apply the next coat of paint or varnish. Repeat the process for each coat, making sure to sand and wipe the surface before applying the next layer.

Remember, patience is the key here! Take your time and be thorough in sanding away those nibs. By doing so, you'll be rewarded with a beautifully smooth and professional-looking finish on your project.

Happy sanding......and remember if this all sounds like too much hard work, give us a call, text or email for a competitive estimate for us to do it for you!
